Collection Summary
Collection Title
Hyllested Collection
Description
This small collection is made up of compositions by August Hyllested who was born in Stockholm in 1856, became a concert pianist and held a number of teaching posts in various parts of the world over many years - United States, Scotland, Denmark and Sweden. He retired to Blairmore, Argyll, and died there in 1946. In 1949 his widow presented to Glasgow University Library a number of his unpublished works, all undated: 10 songs and 1 choral work, 2 orchestral works, 3 piano pieces and 2 unfinished compositions. With this donation came some letters, including one from each of the following: Eugen d'Albert, Sir Edward Elgar, Edvard Grieg, Sir Henry Wood, and one to his father-in-law from Franz Liszt, from whom Hyllested had lessons. The arrangement of this material reflects the original order in which it was received. The collection will primarily be of interest to researchers

Collections Overview
Glasgow University Library has been in existence for over 500 years and as such holds a number of important special music collections. The majority of the collections relate to Scottish composers and musicians or musicians associated with Scotland, e.g. Sir John Blackwood McEwen and Hamish MacCunn. The collections include important historical material, in particular the material held in the Euing Collection, which includes manuscripts of two medieval liturgical works, an early 17th century lute book, a set of part-books belonging to the publisher John Playford, and biographical documents and letters sent to John Sainsbury for use in his Dictionary of musicians which appeared in 1824.
The general music collection includes books, scores and AV material.
