Collection Summary

Collection Title
Joly Music
Description
The Joly collection spans music written during the latter years of the 18th century and the early years of the 19th century. Much of the earlier part of the collection is vocal music, songs with keyboard accompaniment, sometimes with obbligato for flute, oboe etc., and the occasional country dance. The vocal pieces are popular songs of the era, taken from operas and entertainments which were all the rage during the 18th and early 19th centuries. The collection reflects the prevailing fashion of setting Irish tunes or using fanciful romantic Irish ideas in song, often by by composers who had no connections with Ireland at all.
